Coaches Corner

Well, every team is bound to have am off day, it is hard when it is a power league day. We succeeded last month at achieving the goal of being in Gold and we were ready to prove that's where we should be. We started off playing CC Athletics and won in a hard fought match. Pumped up for the next match, we tried our best but unfortunately came up a bit short. The same thing for our third pool play match as well.
We headed into the afternoon play knowing we needed to win to stay in Gold. This is where the girls learned they need to communicate more with each other in order to succeed in the Gold division or any tournament when playing tough competition. We learned the hard way and lost the crossover - headed back to Silver. We won the last game (again against CC Athletics) and so we will be number 9 once again.
We are determined to get back to Gold and show the other teams that is where we SHOULD be.

Amazing. Fantastic. Phenomenal. All three are ways to say how our girls did in the President’s Day Classic in Seattle. This was our first multi-day tournament and we expected the girls to possibly get tired, however, as the weekend went on they only seemed to get more aggressive and excited to be out on the court. We started Saturday ranked first in our pool and we maintained that seed quite easily, beating all three teams in 2 games.
Sunday we faced tougher competition. We beat Nafanua (who we traded off with cheering for each other’s teams the rest of the weekend) and then lost to Kent Juniors in three. We needed to take home the win in the afternoon to set us up for the Gold bracket where we deserved to be. Of course, we headed to 3 with them. We had the momentum in the third game and beat a very formidable opponent.
Monday we started the morning off right, beating our first opponent in 2 games. We were in the semifinals! We played Puget Sound in the semifinal match and through all the outside distractions from the other coaches and ref, our girls remained focused on the task at hand and won in 2. We played Oregon Juniors in the championship and kept our 2 game streak alive.
Every girl stepped up in their role on the team to help achieve this win. This weekend we saw the best volleyball the girls have ever played. This is the second tournament in a row we have won, and we are looking forward to more!
We would like to give a special thank you to our parents for their support during the weekend, not just by cheering and supporting the team’s effort, but by making our jobs easy! We have an amazing support structure in place! Thanks to Brad and Dianne for coming and supporting the girls during the championship match!
(oh, and a special victory shout out to the laser tag girls!!!)

Proud does not even begin to describe the feeling parents and us coaches experienced on Sunday! The girls demonstrated just how much heart they had for the game and the desire they shared to move up to Gold where Kristin and I believe they belonged to begin with. The day started off with us working with a 5-1 offense instead of the 6-2 offense we had been using. The girls took to this change as though they had played this way all their careers. Our first two matches went fairly smoothly, setting us up to play the number 2 ranked team in our pool to determine the pool winner. The girls started off a little slower than they should in the match and unfortunately fell to Columbia Juniors.
Going into the bracket in the afternoon, we had to beat Webfoot to get the chance to move up to Gold. Of course we had to go three games with them; it couldn’t just be easy! With all parents and us on the bench feeling our hearts beat out of our chests, the girls went into the third game looking as though we may remain in Silver. Slowly, they started to pick it up and came back from a decent lead over them to win the match! We were moving to Gold!
The only thing standing between a championship and us was the one team we had lost too earlier in the day. This time, the girls did not hesitate to start off strong. It was a hard-fought match and we came out victorious! Championship under our belt, we were ready to head home, however, the girls and parents showed the essence of good sportsmanship by allowing Columbia Juniors to start their 3 ½ hour drive home and we remained behind to referee the final game of the night. Being the last ones out of the gym Sunday was worth it, the girls now have had a taste of championship and are hungry for more!

The girls started a little nervously, but by the end of the first match they were confident and proud to put a “W” up on the boards for their first match in tournament play. With a win behind them, they went into the second match knowing they could do it, and they could do even better! They won the second match much more easily and were looking extremely gelled as a unit on the court. They went into the last pool play match of the day tied 2-0 with Columbia Juniors. The team was much better than the other two teams the girls played in the morning; however, they turned up the heat and won the pool! This set the girls up to remain the 5th seed going into the harder crossover matches in the afternoon.
The first crossover match started off well, the girls fighting and winning the first set. They came up a little short in the second set and they had to take it to three. After a shaky start in the third game, the girls started to get back into their grove, but it was a little bit too late. The match was lost but proved to the girls that they need to stay focused and come out hot to be able to beat teams at our level. They won the second crossover match easily in the afternoon. The team ended up taking the 9th seed in the qualifier, which sets them up to win Silver next month and move back up to Gold where Kristen and I believe they rightfully belong!
The girls left everything they had on the court this weekend and made both coaches (and all parents) proud of the effort, teamwork, and heart displayed at the tournament. The team plays together like they have been a team for longer than just a month and a half and the support (and hospitality) of the parents has been a huge factor in helping the team become this way so quickly.
